Last year over 48 municipalities (including Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline, and dozens more) adopted the Specialized Energy Code. Under these new rules, multifamily buildings over 12,000 square feet must meet Passive House standards.

The reimbursement details listed above apply to the training itself ($2240/person). The exam fees are not included, and need to be covered by the employer out of pocket ($450/person).
How to Get Started
By participating in this Massachusetts Specialized Energy Code training, your firm stays compliant while utilizing state funding.
- Confirm Eligibility: Ensure you are a Massachusetts-based, for-profit employer with 100 or fewer MA employees who is current on UI contributions.
- Request a Certificate of Compliance: Obtain this from the Massachusetts DUA (valid for one month from issue).
- Submit the Express Grant Application: Apply through commcorp.org at least 21 days before the first course session.
- Enroll and Train: Once approved, enroll your team in Emu Passive’s CPHT training.
- Receive Reimbursement: Complete the training and submit your documentation to receive your check.
Important Grant Application Details:
- Grant applications must be submitted at least 21 days before the start of training. No exceptions will be granted.
- A complete grant application must include:
- A valid Certificate of Good Standing from the Massachusetts Department of Revenue (issued within the past six months)
- A current Certificate of Compliance from the Department of Unemployment Assistance (not expired as of the application date)
- A signed Form W-9 verifying the business’s full legal name and FEIN
- Note: Applications with outdated or incorrect documents will be automatically rejected.
- Once a grant application is approved, a service agreement will be issued containing a project number and award amount. The agreement is sent via DocuSign to the point of contact on the application and must be reviewed and e-signed prior to the start of training.

Boston CPHT Bootcamp Logistics
Your attendance schedule depends on which training option you pick for our Boston bootcamp. Both paths lead to the same Certified Passive House Tradesperson credential. However, we designed them to fit different professional needs:
The FOCUS Option – Approved for funding
- In-Person Duration: four and a half days in-person training.
- Schedule: Participants spend two days in a classroom with an instructor. Afterward, they spend two days working on the Passive Pod module and half a day taking the certification test.
- Best For: Those who want a fully immersive experience with live instruction for the entire building science curriculum.

Is this training for PHIUS or PHI? This training is for professionals working on both Phius and PHI projects – commercial, multi family, residential, and remodeling projects. Participants who pass the exam become Passive House certified with PHI.
Is Emu Passive an official training provider? Yes. Emu Passive is a registered training provider with the Commonwealth Corporation (Provider ID: 1141753).
Can I apply for multiple employees? Yes. You can apply for several employees at once, up to a maximum of $30,000 per organization per year.
Is this the same as the MassSave passive house training? This is the same training that is eligible for the MassSave Passive House & All-Electric Homes Training, however, it is a different funding program.
Do I have to pay upfront? Yes. The grant is a reimbursement program. You pay for the training first, then submit proof of completion to receive your funds from the state.
What happens if an employee fails the exam? The grant covers the training itself. Reimbursement is typically tied to the completion of the course sessions rather than the specific exam outcome, but verify current CommCorp guidelines for the most up-to-date policy.
